Our family has really enjoyed Nosara. It is very much an ex-pat scene but it’s not overbuilt with huge hotels and condos. Playa Guiones has shops and restaurants and is totally walkable, and Playa Pelada is more residential and low key with an incredible beach for looking for shells and small marine life. The kids loved that the howler monkeys would come through the trees every afternoon. La Luna is one of my favorite restaurants ever - super magical last night of vacation meal. We fly to Liberia, take a van or drive to Nosara (bumpy ride but straightforward), rent a house in Playa Pelada with a pool but close enough to walk to Playa Guiones.
